smart bolts

SmartBolts, designed for industrial and medical applications, feature a simple color-coded indicator on their tops: if they're red, the bolt is loose. if they're green, nice job, everything's locked down. if they're black, you may over-tightened things a bit.

lilliputians...

Beached from Keith Loutit on Vimeo.

Tilt-shift lenses sit off-center of the film (or sensor) plane of your camera to produce photos with extremely limited depth of field, giving the effect of a macro shot of a tiny scene. When the effect is matched with the surreal speed boost of many stills strung together into a time-lapse movie (here by Keith Loutit), we get the other-worldly privilege of seeing real Australian beach goers as an elaborate Playmobil scape

green design festival

Green Design Festival is an original, public, free cultural event under the aegis of the City of Athens. It aims at fostering a wider understanding about environmental and ecological issues amongst the citizens of Athens and beyond.

Using new technologies, powerful imagery and design, this festival will transform Athens into a lively, interactive space which will present proposals and ideas about how everyday life could be greener and more friendly to the environment.

Participants include over 70 architects, industrial designers, graphic designers, fashion and street artists, who have worked on the theme of the festival on projects who embrace the non-connoisseur.

childish fun

The Ringshot is a change from your regular slingshots, as this one is worn on your hand with a durable rubber band attached to the metal piece. It won't be easy to miss your target now, unless the "bullets" that you use are of inferior quality. Unfortunately, most kids these days prefer to settle their rivalry online by spamming hate messages on one another's blogs instead of slugging it out like a man in the classroom with discreet projectiles under the teacher's nose.

lack of inspiration?

the 2008 Plagiarius awards have been announced.
what can we as designer do to stop manufactures from unlawfully appropriating our work?
how can we make ethics a major parameter in a capitalistic global society?

super virus/super computer

The Storm Worm Botnet currently infects between one and ten million computers worldwide, which means that it has access to a huge amount of processing power and somewhere between 1 and 10 petabytes of RAM. This apparently makes it one of the most powerful computers in the world, with more computing power than the ten fastest supercomputers in the world combined.

These interesting but admittedly vague and flaky estimates come from computer scientist Peter Gutman. Although you can pick at the numbers quite easily, the guy makes a very interesting point. While projects like Seti@Home can harness a lot of computing power, a virus or worm that doesn't need to ask permission from a user could conceivably be vastly more powerful. Imagine the potential if virus writers found more interesting things to do with those cycles than send spam.

Will the first person to find extraterrestrial signals be an amateur hacker, rather than Seti? Could complex protein folding solutions be found by bored crackers? And would the benevolent act of finding a cure for a genetic illness outweigh the malevolent act of creating the worm that rounded up the processing cycles needed to do it?

kai cars

i love these small japanese cars. when in japan last november i was so impressed by their design and ergonomics. tall westerners fitted easily and the cars zipped through trafic. parking space was no problem either. i really can not understand why they are not imported in europe where our only choice is the over expensive smart.

the ones we love

"the Ones We Love is a project highlighting young and talented photographers from around the world. each artist contributed six photographs of the person(s) who is most important to them, taken outdoors in a natural setting. the goal of the website is to portray the people who are loved, cherished, and inspirational to these artists, and also showcase the differences and similarities in the photographs each of them took within the same guidelines." the ones we love

out of site, out of mind?

It's not exactly a Leif-Ericson-class discovery in terms of positivity, but it's important nonetheless. Oceanographer Charles Moore was on the high seas between Hawaii and the US mainland when he drifted into the "'North Pacific gyre'--a vortex where the ocean circulates slowly because of little wind and extreme high pressure systems. Usually sailors avoid it. What he found was revolting:

He was astonished to find himself surrounded by rubbish, day after day, thousands of miles from land. "Every time I came on deck, there was trash floating by," he said in an interview. "How could we have fouled such a huge area? How could this go on for a week?"

This "garbage continent" is apparently twice the size of the US landmass, and was formed from garbage both shipborne and dumped from land. Even worse, it's more malevolent than just a bunch of floating rubbish--it's decomposing into a kind of toxic soup, and it's due to double in size over the next decade. Read the unbelievable tale here.

inspired by a great master

according to Dieter Rams:
• Good design is innovative.
• Good design makes a product useful.
• Good design is aesthetic.
• Good design helps us to understand a product.
• Good design is unobtrusive.
• Good design is honest.
• Good design is durable.
• Good design is consequent to the last detail.
• Good design is concerned with the environment.
• Good design is as little design as possible.

Gizmodo has a great article about how the designers of apple are inspired by the work of Dieter Rams for Braun.

this is a great book for all designers
it describes concisely all manufacturing processes to refresh your memory, it could also be an ideal reference for design students

lets follow the example of the Japanese and lets become green anarchist's.

is that the future of laptops?

I don't know how real this video of the next macbook is, but it was well overdue to see some real innovative solutions. laptop computers are widely used not only by professionals any more, design wise though they have not changed since they first appeared. lets hope this is the manufacturers will take giving designers the platform for further innovation.

heat sensitive coffee mug, it could be much better

"At plain sight it is a standard black mug as they come a dime a dozen and in big white letters it say OFF. Nothing fancy, but once you add the hot beverage of your choice, the mug changes color and is turning white and in big black letters it states: ON" via betterlivingthroughdesign

more and more we will be seeing the application of smart materials in everyday objects, it is our responsibility though to design in such a way as not to make novelty or ''gadgety'' items but products that serve the task for which they have been designed.

lets see if we can do better, send me your solutions on how you would incorporate heat sensitive pigments on a coffee mug, I will post the most innovative ideas and try to produce the best on through begdesign

osx tablet

the long-awaited Modbook is finally shipping. First unveiled nearly a year ago at Macworld 2007, the MacBook-based, Wacom-modified Modbook has definitely seen its share of delays, although in the days and months since, the 13.3-inch slate has gained the distinction of being one of the few pieces of non-Cupertino, Apple-approved hardware.
